There is a parent/child system that links images together, it doesn't merge information or change anything else about the pair. To link posts, navigate to the child post and click on 'Edit', it will be near the bottom underneath the picture and tags and source, and a new text box will appear directly above where you clicked Edit that should say 'Parent', then just enter the parent post ID. The IDs are listed along the left hand side of the screen, just underneath the tags.
You can link as many images you want to a parent post. When two or more images are parented to the same post, they are said to be siblings to each other.
